A BRIEF PROFILE
The Vienna Jewish Choir
Since 1989 the Vienna Jewish Choir has been an important contributor to Jewish music and cultural exchange in Vienna. With a growing repertoire of Yiddish, Hebrew and Ladino songs, arranged by the renowned singer and conductor Roman Grinberg it plays a vital part in the aim to make Jewish culture an integral part of life in Vienna again. With members from more than ten countries (men and women, Jewish and non-Jewish) it is also a symbol for openness, tolerance and a shared vision of mutual respect.
Twenty years ago the Vienna Jewish Choir, founded by Dr. Timothy Smolka, started with 8 members. Today it unites 50 active singers and a history of numerous international appearances (for example, Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, the Ukraine and USA).
In June 2009 the choir celebrated its 20th anniversary with a gala concert in the Wiener Konzerthaus under the patronage of the Federal President Heinz Fischer. After a programme called “A bissele Glik” in 2007/2008 (with the release of a very well received CD, also available on iTunes) the current repertoire evolves around “Fargesene Lider”, songs that have been well known and fell into oblivion in the past decades.
The next international tour will direct the Vienna Jewish Choir to the far Eastern parts of Europe with concerts planned in Odessa and Istanbul, under the umbrella “Bridging Europe”.
